Waiguru distributes relief food to over 1000 people at Gathigiriri

Over 1000 residents of Gathigiriri ward in Kirinyaga County have benefitted from relief food supplies donated by Governor Anne Waiguru. Waiguru says the food supplies will help alleviate the suffering of the residents who have been struggling to get food as a result of failed previous seasons. “We are distributing rice and cooking oil to 1,000 households in Matandara and its environs. Each will get 4 kilos of rice and cooking oil,” she said. The Governor said the food supplies had been bought by the county government. She asked residents to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant food crops and harvest rain water for use after rains subsides.

The Council of Governors chair said that she is aware that many residents in the county have been hit hard by the high cost of living, and cited this as the prime reason for distributing relief food in the region. Waiguru said her administration will continue empowering the residents through programs such as Wezesha, which is aimed at increasing household income through increased agricultural productivity. The elderly, people living with disabilities and the sick were the first to get handed the relief supplies. Gathigirira ward’s MCA Benson Ngahu said the area is among those hit by drought as a result of failed rains.

Deputy Governor David Githanda lauded the Governor for her effort to secure relief food from the government that had been distributed to residents of Mutithi, Murinduko and Wamumu ward.
